The heavy rains affecting Bangkok and other areas in central Thailand in late September have caused flooding, traffic disruptions, and a series of emergency measures by authorities.
The Thai government has placed Bangkok and several provinces on alert due to the risk of further heavy rains, flash floods, and water accumulation in urban areas. According to the Thai Meteorological Department, between September 25 and 28, Bangkok and its surroundings may still experience heavy rainfall, with localized instances of very intense volumes.
In Bangkok, the situation has prompted the municipal administration to intensify the operation of drainage systems. According to information released this weekend, 93 roads in the capital have reported flooding, while five canals remain at critical levels. The city estimates that, barring any significant new rainfall, it will take two to three days to normalize drainage in some areas.
It was also announced that schools managed by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will be closed on Monday, September 28, as a measure to reduce vehicle flow and facilitate movement during the recovery of affected areas.
On social media and local news outlets, there are reports that September 28 and 29 have been declared holidays in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, and Samut Prakan, along with the potential extension of toll exemptions on certain expressways until the night of the 29th. However, at the time of this publication, we have not found official confirmation of these two measures from Thai government channels, so we recommend that residents and travelers monitor official announcements before altering their plans.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has expedited his return to Thailand to personally oversee the response to the flooding and stated that the government intends to enhance coordination among agencies responsible for drainage, public assistance, and flood prevention.
What Tourists and Residents Should Observe
Those in Bangkok or the metropolitan area in the coming days should consider potential changes in traffic, school operations, public services, and land transportation. Low-lying areas and regions near canals remain the most susceptible to flooding.
Authorities recommend monitoring weather alerts and avoiding flooded areas. The Meteorological Department forecasts a gradual improvement in conditions starting September 29, although rain showers may still occur in Bangkok and surrounding areas.
