Anutin Says Thailand Will Not Reopen Borders with Cambodia for Now

BANGKOK – Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the country has no plans to reopen its border crossings with Cambodia or to restore bilateral relations to previous levels until key issues regarding territorial disputes, transnational crime, and national security are resolved.
Speaking on the "Talk with Anutin’s Cabinet" program at 9:05 AM on October 31, Anutin, who also serves as the Interior Minister, said the government cannot yet provide a timeline for when the crossings will be reopened.
According to him, there is currently no indication that relations with Cambodia will return to their previous state until Thailand's concerns are addressed, including land and maritime disputes, scam networks, and the safety of Thai citizens.
The Prime Minister noted that the crossings have been closed for some time and that the government must continue to prioritize Thailand's national interests.
Prevention of Illegality and Security
Anutin emphasized the need to prevent the entry of illegal goods and agricultural products into the country, combat transnational criminal networks, and address security concerns before considering the resumption of bilateral relations.

He also stated that the government will not change its policy merely due to political pressure and will not allow political games to overshadow the country's interests.
“Since the border crossings were closed, all economic indicators have improved and people are satisfied,” Anutin said.
He added that the government needs to consider the wishes of the population when determining the next steps.
“At this moment, there is no indication that relations will return to the previous level. If we are to talk, there are still many steps to take. For now, we need to do what we want,” Anutin stated.
